Consecration Sunday Devotion for Friday, October 20:

“[Jesus] looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” – Luke 21:1-4

How does Jesus define “value” in this passage? Do we measure value the same way Jesus does?

Lord, help me to see my gifts and the gifts others in the same way that you see them. Amen.

Consecration Sunday Devotion for Thursday, October 19:

“Then they sent to [Jesus] some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it.” And they brought one. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Jesus said to them, “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at him.” – Mark 12:13-17

What do you think Jesus is teaching here? What is the government’s? What is God’s?

Lord, may I never confuse the discipline of giving with the requirement of taxes. Amen.

Consecration Sunday devotional for Wednesday, October 18:

“Those who are generous are blessed,
for they share their bread with the poor.” – Proverbs 22:9

Is there a difference between “giving” and “sharing”? How much “sharing” is a part of your life? How much “sharing” is a part of what we do as a church?

Lord, help me to embrace the relationships and the blessing that comes from sharing. Amen.
